The Nigeria Super Eagles began their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament with a hard-fought 2–1 win against Tanzania, highlighted by an outstanding second-half goal from Ademola Lookman.

‎Competing in Morocco, Nigeria aimed to make a strong impression in Group C following their recent World Cup qualification setbacks. The Super Eagles started strong, dominating the early moments and creating multiple clear opportunities, though they faced resistance from a skilled Tanzanian goalkeeper.

‎The breakthrough came in the 36th minute when Semi Ajayi capitalized on an Alex Iwobi corner, heading the ball into the net and earning Nigeria a well-deserved lead before halftime.

‎‎In response, Tanzania came back energized after the interval and equalized through Charles M’Mombwa, who scored with a composed finish from close range after a defensive error.

This equalizer prompted a quick reply from Nigeria. Just minutes later, Ademola Lookman demonstrated his finesse by cutting in and unleashing a powerful left-footed shot into the far corner, regaining the lead for Nigeria.

‎The Super Eagles continued to press for a third goal, with Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, and Lookman all challenging the Tanzanian defense, but they couldn't widen the gap. Tanzania also posed a late threat, missing a clear-cut opportunity that could have altered the outcome.

‎Despite the late pressure, Nigeria skillfully managed the game to secure all three points, maintaining their unbeaten record against Tanzania and launching their AFCON campaign on a positive note.

‎‎Next, the Super Eagles will shift their focus to their upcoming group match against Tunisia, aiming to gain momentum and enhance their chances of advancing in the tournament.
