The announcement was made on January 21, 2026, by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during a high-level retreat in Abuja attended by governing council chairmen, rectors, registrars, bursars, and education commissioners from across the country.
What Is a Polytechnic?
A polytechnic is a tertiary institution that focuses on practical, technical, and industry-oriented education. Unlike traditional universities, polytechnics emphasise hands-on training, skill acquisition, and problem-solving, preparing graduates to meet real-world industrial and technological needs.
In Nigeria, polytechnics traditionally award National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) qualifications.
FG’s Plan to Abolish HND Dichotomy

The Federal Government’s new policy seeks to end this inequality by granting polytechnics the authority to award degrees while maintaining their strong practical focus.
According to Dr. Tunji Alausa, the reform will:

Focus on Skills, Innovation, and Sustainability
The Minister emphasised that polytechnics will remain centres of skills-based and industry-ready education. Institutions are encouraged to develop:
• Entrepreneurship hubs
• Research and innovation centres
• Strong industry linkages
Key focus areas include renewable energy, agri-technology, digital manufacturing, and climate-resilient solutions.
He also stressed sustainability, urging polytechnics to boost internally generated revenue, invest in resilient infrastructure, and adopt environmentally friendly campus practices.
TETFund Intervention for Polytechnics
To support the reforms, Dr. Alausa announced a special TETFund intervention in 2026 to equip polytechnic engineering schools with modern facilities. This follows similar upgrades previously carried out in medical colleges across the country.
Challenges and Future Prospects
Despite challenges such as funding gaps, outdated facilities, and societal preference for university education, the Federal Government believes the benefits of reform outweigh the difficulties. With proper regulation, quality assurance, and stakeholder collaboration, polytechnics are expected to play a central role in reducing import dependence and driving national development.
